2ºESO_BRITISH: BYZANTINE ART and CAROLINGIAN ART

Dear students,

here you are your first Art Project.

  • You are going to do this activities in a Document Word that you will send by e-mail your teacher (miaguna@educa.jcyl.es) or in a pendrive. YOU MUST HAND IN YOUR PROJECT ON 14th OCTOBER.
  • Work in pairs. Divide your tasks, but you two must have a look to the final result. The Document Word must be in the same format. 
  • The first page must have the title of the artistic styles, your name and the date of delivering.
  • You must start your activities on the second page.
  • According to the explanations of the masterpieces and characteristics of the artistic style, you must find information in your book. Some information will be found on the Internet.
  • According to the pictures, you can find them on the Internet and then copy and paste them in your Document Word. Other pictures appear in this blog. Copy and paste them in your document.

Long-year project. Part 1. First Term.

A) BYZANTINE ART

BYZANTINE ARCHITECTURE

1.      Copy the definition of the following concepts and add a picture of each one.
a.      Plan
b.      Greek-cross plan
c.       Basilica plan
d.      Cupola (Picture of cupola of Hagia Sophia)

2.      Copy the drawing of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and complete the boxes with the correct word.


3.      Go to exercise 6 on page 78. Copy a similar picture of the interior of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and find out the following places: nave, semicircular arches, central dome, columns, gallery, windows.

4.      Make exercise 8 on page 71 of your book. Copy a similar picture of St. Mark´s Basilica in Venice. Complete the description below the picture.


BYZANTINE MOSAICS

1.      Copy the definition of Mosaic.
2.      Copy a picture of the mosaic of Theodora and ladies of the court.
3.      Copy a picture of the mosaic of the Emperor Justinian surrounded by members of his court.
4.      Make exercise 8 on page 71 of your book.


BYZANTINE ICONS

- Definition of icon and its characteristics.
- Picture of a Byzantine icon of Jesus Christ 

- Picture of a Byzantine icon of Virgin Mary and Child



B) CAROLINGIAN ART

CAROLINGIAN ARCHITECTURE

1.      Copy the definition of the following concepts and add a picture of each one.

  • ashlar
  • barrel vault
  • groin vault
  • underground crypt
  • altar
  • apses
  • cloister
  • refectory
  • tribune
2.- Carolingian secular buildings: copy the cross section of the Palatine Chapel in Aachen and point these parts: gallery or tribune, dome, octogonal plan, semicircular arch. 



3.- Copy and paste one picture of the interior and another picture of the outside of the Palatine Chapel in Aachen.

4.- Make activity 15 on page 77

5.- Make activity 9 on page 79.

6.- Copy and paste the reconstruction of Charlemagne´s Palace in Aachen and add information about its parts.


CAROLINGIAN PAINTING

1.- Copy the definition of the following concepts and add a picture of each one.
