4.- What was the role of craftsmen?

1.- Answer the following questions

  1. What was the consequence of the growth of population?
THERE WAS GREATER DEMAND FOR CLOTHES AND OBJECTS MADE OF WOOD AND METAL.
  1. What kind of craftsmen appeared?
WEAVERS, COOPERS, STONE MASONS, BAKERS, CARPENTERS AND DYERS.
  1. How did craftsmen do their products?
THEY MADE THEIR PRODUCTS BY HAND.
  1. Where did craftsmen work?
THEY WORKED IN SMALL WORKSHOPS.
  1. Where were their workshops located?
THEY WERE LOCATED IN THE OWNER´S HOUSE.
  1. Where were the products sold?
THEY WERE SOLD IN THE OWNER´S HOUSE.
  1. Where did craftsmen of the same profession live?
THEY LIVED IN THE SAME STREET.
  1. What were the names of some streets?
BAKER STREETS, TANNERY ROW.
  1. Study the illustration of a wealthy tailor´s home and workshop on page 34.

WEAVER - MAKING CLOTH
COOPER - MAKING AND REPARING BARRELS
BLACKSMITH - MAKING OBJECTS OUT OF METAL, ESPECIALLY IRON
BAKER - MAKING BREAD
DYER - DYING CLOTHS
CARPENTER - MAKING AND REPAIRING WOODEN OBJECTS


3.- What were the categories of craftsmen?

MASTER CRAFTSMENTHEY OWNED THE WORKSHOPS, THE TOOLS AND THE RAW MATERIALS.
THEY RAN AND CONTROLLED THE GUILDS.


JOURNEYMENSKILLED CRAFTSMEN WHO RECEIVED WAGES.


APPRENTICESTHEY WERE YOUNG MEN WHO WANTED TO LEARN A TRADE.
THEY LIVED IN THEIR MASTER´S HOUSE AND WORKED FOR HIM FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
THEY DID NOT PAY ANY PAYMENT.





4.- Guilds

  1. What was a guild?
IT WAS AN ORGANIZATION WHERE ALL ARTISANS IN THE SAME PROFESSION JOINED.
  1. How was a guild ruled?
EACH GUILD HAD ITS OWN STATUTE, WHICH ESTABLISHED MEMBERS´ RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS.
  1. What were the functions of a guild?
GUILDS CONTROLLED PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTED RAW MATERIALS. THEY CONTROLLED THE NUMBER OF WORKERS, AND ESTABLISHED PRICES.
  1. Could a trader work if he didn´t belong to a guild? Why?
NO, NOBODY COULD WORK IN A TRADE IF THEY DID NOT JOIN A GUILD.
