1 ESO: PALAEOLITHIC ART

 


PERIOD: This is a Palaeolithic cave painting. 
LOCATION: It belongs to Altamira, in northern Spain.
THEME: Animals such as bisons are represented.
STYLE: They are realistic. They represent natural figures.
VOLUME: It was given volume by the surface relief of the cave.
COLOURS: It was polychrome, it means that several colours were used: red, black, brown...
TECHNIQUE: Minerals were mixed with eggs and oil to make colours. Animal hair was sometimes used to make brushes.
PURPOSE: It probably had a religious purpose, and asked for success in hunting.
