    • How many people are there in the world?
      • Today there are almost 7.5 billion people in the world.
    • How many people are born  and in a second?
      • Every second five people are born and two people die in the world.
    • Describe the evolution of world population since 1800 to the present. What are the key moemnts in population growth? What are the projections for 2050? How fast has world population grown? Use intervals.

      • One thousand years ago, there were 0.3 billion people in the world. Plagues, famines and wars caused high death rates and life expectancy was low. It was in 1800 that the world population reached 1 billion for the first time.
      • By 2024, we expect that there will be 8 billion people on Earth. By 2040 9 billions are expected. By the end of the 21st century, there will be 10 billion people in the world.
      • From 1800 to the present world population has grown very rapidly.
      • In 130 years, from 1800 to 1930, population increased from 1 billion to 2 billion people.

    • Which factors allowed population growth? It means, which factors increased births and decreased deaths?
      •  In 1800s the Industrial Revolution took place and a lot of inventions were made. World population increased thanks to the improvements in sanitation and medical advances which reduced the mortality rate. Other key factor is the developement of new agricultural techniques which caused an increase in food production.
    • In what kind of areas has most of the people lived since 2008 to the present?
      • From 2008 most of the people lives in urban areas.
    • What is a megacity? How many megacities were there in 1975? And today?
      • A megacity is a city with more than 10 million inhabitants.
      • In 1975 there were only three megacities: Mexico city, Tokyo and New York city.
      • Today there are 21 megacities.
    • What is the impact on Earth by population growth? Which environmental problems do we have to face?
      • World population growth cause environmental problems because we depend on limited resources for our survival. It´s the core of our environmental problems.
      • It´s not space we need. Standing shoulder to shoulder all 7 billion of us would fill the city of Los Angeles in USA. What we need is balance because just 5% of us consume 23% of the world´s energy, 13% of us don´t have clean water adn 38% of us lack adequate sanitation.
      • The capacity to produce food and energy is limited.
      • It depends on how well we manage our food, water and energy resources.
Hand in your essay on Friday, 21st October.
